Your Moment of Calm with Ravi Pritam: Breathwork and stretch break

Need a break during your workday? Take 10 minutes and enjoy a few stretches for your neck and shoulders, followed by some breathwork that will relieve stress, give you more energy and help clear your mind.

During the breathwork, we’ll be inhaling through the nose in four separate “sniffs” and then exhaling through the nose in one long breath. Your eyes will be closed and your hands can rest comfortably in your lap, on your knees or in gyan mudra (where the tips of your thumb and index fingers touch, your other fingers extend straight and the back of your wrists are resting on your knees.

Your Moment of Calm with Ravi Pritam: An internal “pep talk,” when you need a victory

Picture it. You’re about to take that first step toward a big goal, or you have a meeting later today with your boss or a big client, or you are trying something kind of dauting that you’ve failed at before. Butterflies. Questioning whether you are good enough.

I’ve been there. We all have. And I’m grateful that I found what’s known as the Victory Meditation. While it does require you to sit still and go within for a few minutes, it lends itself perfectly for many situations where you can use a little internal pep talk. Sometimes I’ll even do it while waiting for my tea to brew in the morning.

Sitting in a chair or on the floor. Raise your right arm up as far as you can. Your palm is facing forward. Bring your left palm to your chest and relax your left elbow by your side. Breath in through your nose, hold it for a few seconds and then exhale through your nose. With your arm raised and continuing this breath pattern, silently repeat to yourself “victory.” Anytime you feel like lowering your arm, raise it a little higher and say to yourself “victory.”

In this video, we are practicing for three minutes. If you can’t hold your arm up the whole time, first celebrate that you even started, and second, give yourself kudos for the amount of time you did hold your arm up. And then try again another time. Just by trying, it’s a victory.

Your Moment of Calm with Ravi Pritam: My favorite meditations for stress – Video 5

Over the past four weeks, I’ve shared four of my favorite meditations for stress—either to prevent it or to help alleviate it. I’ve got one more to share with you. Called Meditation for a Calm Heart, this was one of the first meditations I started practicing on a regular basis and it remains one of my favorites.

As the name suggests, it is very calming. It can help relieve anxiety and promotes clear thinking—particularly when it comes to relations with yourself and others.

Sitting tall with your chin parallel to the ground. Placing your left hand on the center of your chest at the Heart Center. The palm is flat against the chest, and the fingers are parallel to the ground, pointing to the right. Raising your right hand with the palm forward, as if you are giving a pledge and joining the tips of your thumb and index finger. The rest of your fingers extend toward the sky.

Closing your eyes. Inhaling slowly and deeply through the nose. Gently holding it as long as you can. When you need to, exhale completely through your nose. Hold the breath out as long as you can and then continue.

Your Moment of Calm with Ravi Pritam: My favorite meditations for stress – Video 4

Take a deep breath and let it go. That’s the premise of the meditation that I’ll be guiding you through in today’s video—one of my five favorite meditations for stress. 💜

Sitting straight—either in a chair or in a cross-legged position on the floor. Making a cup with your two hands with both palms facing up, and the right hand resting on top of the left hand. Your fingers will cross over each other. Holding this open cup at the level of the heart center with your elbows relaxed at your side. Your eyes are slightly open and focused down toward your hands.

Inhaling deeply in a long steady stroke through the nose letting any negative thought come to mind. Exhaling in a focused stream through rounded lips letting that thought go.
