Your Moment of Calm with Ravi Pritam: Energizing and healing meditation for women

In today’s Moment of Calm, I’ll be guiding you through a healing meditation that is for women only (sorry men!) It uses breathwork and an interesting hand mudra (position) and generates a lot of energy. If you have an area of the body that you’d like strengthened, you are encouraged to focus on it while practicing this breathwork.

Sitting tall—either in a chair or in a cross-legged position on the floor. Bring your elbows together in front of the chest, forearms touching from the elbows to the wrists. Make a lotus of the hands by stretching the fingers out straight and apart from one another. Join the pinky fingers at the tips. The thumbs also touch each other along the sides of the first joint and stretch them toward the chest. Your eyes are focused at the triangle formed by the little fingers.

Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose until your lungs are completely full. Then close off both nostrils by placing the tips of the joined thumbs against these openings.

After retaining the breath as long as possible, move the thumbs slightly away from the nostrils again and exhale. Hold the breath out as long as possible. Inhale and continue.

Your Moment of Calm with Ravi Pritam: Breathwork meditation to help you relax

I’ve got a VERY relaxing meditation for you today. In fact, it will relax you so much that the instructions actually state NOT to do this one when you have to go somewhere. The cool thing is, it only takes a few minutes.

Sitting tall, either in a chair or on the floor. Placing your right hand on top of your left hand so the middle segment of each finger on your right hand is aligned with the middle segment of the corresponding finger on the left hand. Joining together the base of the palms and the tips of your thumbs and then resting the thumbs on the middle section of the left index finger. The thumbs should not touch any part of the right hand. You will notice a space between the two hands.

Inhaling through the nose and exhaling completely through the mouth, directing your breath into the space between the hands, making sure you’ve exhaled all of the air out of the lungs.

Your Moment of Calm with Ravi Pritam: Remedy for a difficult day

Whether you are heading into a difficult day or just had one, this meditation may be just what you need. It’s said to give you powerful energy and can help clear your mind so you can rest.

It uses the sound “Ong” which means creator–the primal vibration from which all creativity flows.

Sitting with a straight spine. You’ll interlock all of your fingers except your ring fingers, which are pressed together and pointing upward. The right thumb holds down the left thumb. Place the mudra at diaphragm level, several inches out from the body, with the ring fingers pointing out at a sixty-degree angle. Close your eyes.

Inhale and make the sound “Ong” and hold it as long as you can. The sound is created through your nose by way of the back of your upper pallet, although your mouth is slightly open. When you run out of air, inhale and begin again.

Your Moment of Calm with Ravi Pritam: Breathwork to calm and soothe

If you are new to breathwork and are looking for a simple way to calm and soothe your nerves, this is a great technique for you! It’s one of my favorites and can be done anywhere—at home, at work, on a plane or even in your car (once you’ve reached your destination, please!).

Sitting in a chair or on the floor, block your right nostril with the thumb of your right hand and keep the other fingers straight and pointing up. Close your eyes and take 26 long, deep breaths through the left nostril. That’s it! Not enough time for 26? Just do as many as you can.

Consult your doctor before beginning any breathwork.

Your Moment of Calm with Ravi Pritam: Breathwork for a fresh start

In the spirit of the New Year and starting fresh, I’ll be sharing a very effective breathing technique which is cleansing and purifying. In fact, if practiced regularly, it is said to burn the karmas of many lives.

NOTE: It is recommended that when you practice this breathwork, you do so with an empty stomach or after eating very lightly.

It is a form of alternate nostril breathing, which has many benefits, among which are regulating the nervous system, lowering fear and anxiety, providing clarity—helping you focus on what’s important and creating a deep sense of well-being.

By consciously using different breath ratios, you can yield different effects. For example, here we will inhale for a count of one, hold the breath for a count of four and exhale for a count of two. You’ll use your right hand to alternate the breath through the left and right nostrils. The tip of the thumb can block the right nostril and either the index finger or the pinkie finger can block the left nostril.

Consult your doctor before beginning any breathwork.
